Pre-trip excitement

As I'm retiring from education this year, I decided to take a solo road trip to separate my 39 years of working from the next phase of my life.  I drove Rt. 66 in 2000 and always wanted to return, so that will be the focal point of my trip.

On June 24 I'll be setting out on my long journey cross-country and back.  I'll start by driving down to Long Island, NY with Brian to attend a memorial service for his aunt, who died at 103 this past January.  It will be a celebration of her life, with Brian's mom  (the last of her family) as well as many of Brian's cousins attending.  Aunt Ging was loved by so many.

After our visit, Brian will head home, and I'll be off to Buffalo to visit friends.  Then to Chicago, where Rt. 66 begins.  It winds through 8 states--Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, for just under 2500 miles.

I'll then continue north to Yosemite, Yellowstone, and on to Bismarck, ND, where two of my brothers live.  Then back to Buffalo to be joined by Brian--we'll finish with a visit to Lake George, NY, where his mother will be for the summer.  My estimated mileage (as the crow flies) is already over 8,000 miles!

More history of the "Mother Road" to come.

If any of you have suggestions of places to visit that's not too far off my path, please post!
